Recognizing The Role Of Women and Girls In Science As Agents Of Global Change

In celebrating the International Day of Women and Girls in Science on February 8th – 9th, 2024, Amb. Prof. Joseph Legend Mfon, the Honourable Minister of Environment, State of Birland, emphasized the UN's declaration in 2016, encouraging greater female participation in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics also known as STEM subjects. Discussions focused on women's leadership in achieving Sustainable Development Goals, emphasizing economic prosperity, social justice, and environmental integrity.

Amb. Prof. Joseph Legend Mfon stressed the benefits of female leaders in science, highlighting their lived experiences and inclusive approaches that enhance knowledge in STEM fields. He advocated for mentorship and sponsorship as impactful ways to support women in science, stressing the importance of guidance and career promotion.

Dealing with challenges in achieving gender equality in STEM, Amb. Prof. Joseph Legend Mfon emphasized the need for diversity in research to tackle global issues effectively. He urged action, presenting ideas to encourage girls in STEM, such as science museum visits, reading books featuring women in science, and fostering positive attitudes towards intelligence.

The Minister concluded by recognizing women and girls as essential contributors to science and technology communities, urging strengthened participation. The article concludes with a call to "Think Science ... Think Peace," highlighting the transformative role of women and girls in advancing Sustainable Development Goals 16 and 17.
