Birland State Minister of Environment, Prof. Joseph Legend Mfon Leads Environmental Baseline Studies in the Gulf of Guinea for Nigeria’s Oil and Gas Expansion
In a recent significant move towards harnessing Nigeria's vast Oil and Gas resources, the indefatigable Minister of Environment, who some weeks ago led a tangible foundation that brought the commissioning of the state's Country Environmental Profile or CEP has again proven to be tireless in building Africa's 55th newest humanitarian country.
The report obtained from the Birland Minister of Environment, Prof. Joseph Legend Mfon, FIMC, CMC, and FIOGR, shows the able minister has embarked on a crucial mission in the Gulf of Guinea. This endeavor, undertaken at the behest of the Nigerian Government, involves conducting Environmental Baseline Studies to collate and evaluate vital environmental and social data. These findings will serve as a critical reference point for biophysical and social-environmental status in the region, supporting impact assessment studies for forthcoming projects, by regulatory requirements.
The Gulf of Guinea, a substantial gulf situated in the northeastern part of the tropical Atlantic Ocean, shares its borders with ten countries, including Nigeria, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, and Sao Tome and Principe. The Gulf's expansive coastline encompasses the Bight of Benin and the Bight of Biafra.
The Federal Government of Nigeria, in collaboration with joint venture partners, is resolute in expanding its Oil and Gas supply capacity. These strategic initiatives, in tandem with various other endeavors, are poised to position Nigeria as a key player in the global market. To spearhead these critical environmental studies, Prof. Joseph Legend Mfon, a distinguished Geologist and Environmentalist and a Professor of Environmental Management, has been enlisted to ensure the sustainable development of this vital sector.
