Today, Professor Joseph Legend Mfon, a distinguished geologist, environmentalist, and esteemed Minister of Environment for the State of Birland, will be awarded the Honorary Faculty Alumnus Award by the University of Calabar. This recognition is a testament to his exceptional contributions to environmental management, sustainable development, and international peace.

The award recognizes the members of the alumni who have excelled in their fields of endeavor and contributed to the development of the faculty over the years. The areas of contributions include, but are not limited to, support towards manpower development and training, mentorship, research and development.

Prof. Joseph Legend Mfon’s academic and professional journey is a remarkable blend of expertise and dedication. A graduate of the University of Calabar with a Bachelor of Science in Geology, he holds two Master’s degrees—one in Environmental Management from the University of Calabar and another in Environmental Geology from the University of Benin. His academic excellence is further solidified by a Ph.D. in Environmental and Analytical Techniques from the University of Belfast, Northern Ireland.

A true visionary, Prof. Mfon has over 25 years of experience in the oil and gas industry, where he has become a global authority on pollution control and climate change abatement. His influential role in shaping regulatory frameworks for environmental compliance has earned him respect and admiration in the sector. His commitment to sustainability extends beyond the corporate realm as he has contributed meaningfully to Nigeria’s Petroleum Industry Act 2021, further solidifying his status as a pioneer in environmental governance.

Prof. Mfon is a member of numerous esteemed national and international bodies, including the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals Network, the World Human Rights and Peace Commission, and the International World Peace/Human Rights Africa. His remarkable contributions have been recognized with numerous awards, including the Distinguished Award from the Institute of Oil and Gas Research and Hydrocarbon Studies (2021), the Product Quality Service Award-Innovation Award of Excellence (2019), and several honorary doctorates from institutions across the globe.

Beyond his scientific and regulatory achievements, Prof. Mfon is a respected voice for global peace and sustainability. He has served as the keynote speaker at the World Peace Summits in 2022 and 2023, the International Conference on United Nations SDGs, and the World Environment Day in Nigeria (2019). His inspiring leadership has influenced policy, empowered young professionals, and promoted sustainable practices globally.
