August Break

Yellow and Red Peppers by Chika Udekwe

This year the rainy season
will extend to November. There are claims
that this year's August break
has orchestrated this change.
But the thing is
how many growers
know this abrupt change
and can extend farming.
The season's interrupted drought
of rain for more than two weeks
should be the longest interruption,
and the fear among growers
especially of perishable crops
is sufficiently relatable.

Crops do not only quit
production of pollens,
they are perishing greatly quietly.
Those crops that must bloom
when the rain comes
have seen their rare doom.

It was a shared sadness
although August break is now over.
Coming to an end
with heavy uninterrupted rain
now and then but,
Nimet, among those who claim
the rain will last to November
may not know that
not all the growers know
this swift change
so they can adjust
and prolong crop production.

Unless Nimet comes to radio
and say it again... but
how many people will tune in
when the news is made on air?
How many people will take these words
very serious here?
